Japan’s Most Entertaining Castle

The Charm of Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu is a dynamic city where nature and urban life blend seamlessly. From the historic Mojiko Port, known for its preserved Western-style buildings, to the vibrant Kokura district, the city offers a rich cultural experience. Visitors can indulge in delicious local cuisine while enjoying breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery.

With convenient access via Shinkansen (bullet train) and airport connections, Kitakyushu is an ideal destination for travelers from all over Japan. Whether for business or leisure, the city is packed with diverse attractions waiting to be explored.

Kokura Castle: The Only Castle in Fukuoka with a Tenshukaku (Main Keep)

Kokura Castle is the only castle in Fukuoka Prefecture that features a Tenshukaku, the iconic main keep of a traditional Japanese castle.

With its unique architectural style, known as “Kara-zukuri” (Tang-style construction), and its rich history, Kokura Castle stands as a proud symbol of Kitakyushu.

Explore the historical exhibits, take in the breathtaking panoramic views from the top floor, and immerse yourself in the samurai culture that once shaped this land.

Japan’s Greatest "Sea Castle" – A Vast and Impressive Fortress

Recognized by castle experts as Japan’s greatest sea castle, Kokura Castle once boasted the fifth-largest castle grounds in the country. In western Japan, it was second only to Himeji Castle in scale. In Kyushu, its sheer size was unmatched, with an overall structure nearly twice the size of Kumamoto Castle—so vast that it was often described as “astonishingly large.”

The castle’s design encompassed nearly the entire town of Kokura, making it a dominating presence in the region. However, what visitors see today is just a small portion of the original complex, consisting of parts of the Honmaru (main keep area) and Ninomaru (secondary area). Imagining its original scale helps us appreciate just how grand and imposing this fortress once was.

The Pride of Kitakyushu: The Majestic Tenshukaku of Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle stands as a historical landmark and the only castle in Fukuoka Prefecture with a Tenshukaku (main keep). Towering as the sixth tallest castle keep in Japan, its first floor boasts one of the largest floor areas in the country. Among all existing castle keeps in Japan today, Kokura Castle ranks third in overall scale, exuding a commanding presence that leaves visitors in awe.

This magnificent structure once served as a key stronghold of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Kyushu, often referred to as its “Kyushu branch.” Its grandeur and impressive scale reflect the strategic and historical significance it held during its time, making it one of the most remarkable castles in Japan.

You can often find Toraccha welcoming guests at the first floor of the Tenshukaku (main keep) or in front of Shiro Terrace. If you’re lucky, you might even meet the real-life Toraccha during your visit! Legend has it that those who encounter Toraccha are blessed with good fortune.
